Is openWorkstand really free?
Yes. Every tool and every workspace app is free, with no sign-up, no watermarks and no daily limits. Public tool pages may show a few ads to cover costs; there are never ads inside your workspace, and ads never see your files.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. openWorkstand has no servers that store your files. Tools process files inside your browser, and the workspace saves documents, spreadsheets, notes and projects to a folder you choose on your own computer. Two optional features use the internet and say so on their pages: voice typing uses your browser's own speech service, and citation lookups send only the DOI or ISBN you enter.
Where is my work saved?
When you open the workspace you pick or create a folder, for example Documents/My openWorkstand. Inside it you will find Documents, Spreadsheets, Notes, Tasks, Projects, Calendar, Whiteboards, Code, PDFs and Images. Browsers that cannot open folders (such as Firefox and Safari) keep your files in private browser storage instead, and you can download them at any time.
Can I open the files in Word or Excel?
Yes. Documents are saved as .docx, spreadsheets as .xlsx, the calendar as .ics, notes as Markdown and whiteboards as .excalidraw, so they open in the apps you already know.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is nothing to sign up for. Open a tool or your workstand and start working.
Does it work offline and on my phone?
Yes. Once a page has loaded, the tools and your workspace keep working without a connection. Everything works in modern browsers on computers, tablets and phones.
